7 Tips For Keeping A Routine For Your Wellness

"Routines have a bad reputation of being dull, boring ruts we fall into over time. But a lot of routines can actually be really helpful for maintaining both our physical and mental wellbeing. And now that many of our normal routines have been disrupted, it’s become more important than ever to establish routines to keep us healthy, happy and - well - sane.
I, for one have been having a tough time setting up and sticking to any routine other than waking up every morning and silently screaming into the void. So, I asked my coworkers here at MHA about what kinds of routines have been helpful to them for maintaining their wellbeing during these ~unprecedented times~

Here’s a list of  what they said (summarized, not all direct quotes):
  1. Setting up a regular(ish) sleeping schedule and sticking to it! It’s so easy to push your usual schedule back later and later when you don’t feel a real need to get your day started at any particular time. But nearly everyone I talked to found that trying to stick to a regular sleep schedule helped them feel better and more productive during the day, and (bonus!) helps the days not blur together quite so much.

  2. Creating a schedule that works for all the members of your household. This is not to say that everyone in your house needs to follow the same schedule, but rather that things like work, childcare, and household chores are all getting done, with the responsibilities shared fairly. I’ve been told this one’s a game changer for preventing burnout of the adults in the house.

  3. Drinking water and eating regular meals. When you’re home all the time it’s really easy to eat constantly out of boredom, or conversely, to lose track of time and realize it’s 6 pm and you’ve had nothing to eat or drink all day other than coffee. But according to my coworkers, drinking water regularly is one of the easiest and best routines they’ve all incorporated into their quarantine lives (virtually every person I asked told me this). Another common routine that people found to be really helpful was making sure to eat at regular times (i.e. not skipping meals and then making up for it by eating shredded cheese out of the bag at 3am). Putting good things into your body can make a big difference in both your physical and mental wellbeing!

  4. Exercise! This is one that people talk about all the time and sounds really great in theory, but in practice may be a bit more unapproachable to some of us (me). But one of my coworkers reminded me that exercise can take a number of forms - it can be fun things like dancing in your kitchen or taking a walk with a (mask wearing!) friend, or it could even be practical like vigorously cleaning your house or doing yard work. Whatever it is, regularly setting aside a bit of time to release some energy is a great wellness routine to add into your day."

Here's The "Graphic" Commercial You Didn't See During The Oscars

ABC rejected the commerical about postpartum recovery, claiming it was "too graphic."

"A postpartum ad that was supposed to air during the Oscars is gaining attention online after ABC rejected it for being too "graphic."

The 60-second commerical made by Frida Mom shows a new mom waking up in the middle of the night and struggling to use the bathroom, while using different products to help her, including mesh underwear. The ad ends, saying "Postpartum recovery doesn't have to be this hard," followed by products the company sells. 

Frida Mom posted their ad on YouTube and introduced it by saying, "The ad you're about to watch was rejected by ABC and the Oscars from airing during this year's award show. It's not 'violent, political' or sexual in nature. Our ad is not 'religious or lewd' and does not portray 'guns or ammunition.' 'Feminine hygiene & hemorrhoid relief' are also banned subjects."

The compnay submitted the commercial to air during the 2020 Oscars, but according to Health.com, it was rejected for being "too graphic with partial nudity and product demonstration."

The Confidence Gap

“Evidence shows that women are less self-assured than men-and that to succeed, confidence matters as much as competence. Here’s why and what to do about it.”

Confidence in Women
Although women have worked hard and have made great strides including the following:
  1. Women now earn more college degrees than men
  2. Women make up half of the workforce
  3. Women are closing the gap in middle management
  4. Companies that employ women large numbers out perform their competitors on every measure of probability
 
**Men still get promoted faster and paid more. Women still struggle to make it to top positions. The number of women in top positions is very small and barely increasing.
 
Women are lacking in confidence, including women who are highly successful in the professional world. There is a vast confidence gap that separates women and men. Compared with men:
 
*Women don’t consider themselves as ready for promotions.
*Women predict they’ll do worse on tests.
*Women end up going into less competitive fields like human resources or marketing.
*Women generally underestimate their abilities.
*Women feel confident only when they are perfect…or practically perfect.
 
"The confidence gap is important because success correlates with confidence just as much as it correlates with competence.  Having talent isn’t merely about being competent; confidence is a part of that talent, you have to have it to excel."
 
“Confidence is the stuff that turns thoughts into action. It is the factor that turns thoughts into judgements about what we are capable of, and that then transforms those judgements into action.” –Richard Petty (Psychology professor at Ohio State University who has spent decades studying confidence.)
 
"Women also suffer from the perfectionism mentality. Women strive to be perfect in all that they do. Women have fixating thoughts on their performance at home, at school, at work, at the gym, and even on vacation. Women have obsessive thoughts about every role in their lives because we want to do them all perfectly, but perfectionism is another confidence killer. Striving to be perfect actually keeps women from getting too much of anything done.  
 
Is this to say that men don’t suffer from thoughts of doubt?
 
No, men do suffer the occasional thought of doubt, but not with such exacting and repetitive zeal, and they don’t let their doubts stop them. Women often times let their doubt or lack of confidence get in the way of trying. Women can do just as well as men when taking tests or performing in top positions, but they choose not to try because they don’t feel confident in their ability to perform. This is what holds women back. Women avoid taking risks because they fear making mistakes and strive to be perfect. When we hesitate because we aren’t sure (low confidence), we hold ourselves back.
 
The good news is that we are capable of performing just as well as men do! The evidence is implicit, to become more confident, women need to stop over thinking and just act! The more that we do this, the more confidence we will build. By shifting our thought patterns and behavior, by keeping at it, channeling our talent for hard work, we can make our brains more confident prone."
